The NIH announced a short-term automatic eligibility extension for prospective applicants to the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program. This extension is being granted in response to disruptions caused by the recent lapse in federal appropriations and is intended to lessen the impact of these disruptions on application submission, peer review, and award processing. Purpose

This Notice of Information strongly encourages applicants to request a Pre-Application Consultation to discuss the responsiveness of their proposed research to RFA-OD-25-008, “Tobacco Regulatory Science Small Grant Program for New Investigators (R03 Clinical Trial Optional),” Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), and the FDA Center for Tobacco Products' (CTP) regulatory authorities.

To be considered responsive to this NOFO, applications must propose research aims that fall within (1) FDA CTP’s regulatory authority and (2) one or more of the High-Priority Research Topics identified in RFA-OD-25-008. Applications that do not meet these criteria will be withdrawn prior to peer review. Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in a Pre-Application Consultation to determine responsiveness before submitting an application.

To ensure timely consultation, applicants are asked to submit a draft Specific Aims page to TRSP (TRSP@nih.gov) no later than May 14, 2026.

NIDA seeks to advance its mission by providing the scientific community with the opportunity to request access to biospecimens from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, and the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to conduct research consistent with study objectives that will maximize the scientific utility of these limited samples. The purpose of this NOFO is to invite applications proposing the innovative analysis of existing social science, behavioral, administrative, and neuroimaging data to study the etiology and epidemiology of drug using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug) and related disorders, prevention of drug use and HIV, and health service utilization. The closing date for applications is December 3, 2027.

This NOFO encourages pilot and preliminary research in preparation for larger-scale services research effectiveness trials. Relevant trials may test a wide range of approaches, including interventions, practices, and policies designed to optimize access to, and the quality, effectiveness, affordability and utilization of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use disorder treatments and related services, as well as services for comorbid medical and mental disorder conditions. The closing date for applications is May 7, 2027. More information.

The purpose of the NHLBI Emerging Investigator Award is to promote scientific productivity and innovation by providing long-term support and increased flexibility to experienced Program Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) who are currently PDs/PIs on at least two NHLBI R01-equivalent awards and whose outstanding record of research demonstrates their ability to make major contributions to heart, lung, blood and sleep (HLBS) research. The closing date for applications is April 28, 2027.

The Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA) provides support for individual investigators for research within the scientific mission of NIGMS via a single grant to achieve the following:Increase the stability of funding for NIGMS-supported investigators, which could enhance their ability to take on ambitious scientific projects and approach problems more creatively;Increase flexibility for investigators to follow important new research directions within the NIGMS mission as opportunities arise, rather than being bound to specific aims proposed in advance of the studies;More widely distribute funding among the nation's highly talented and promising investigators to increase overall scientific productivity and the chances for important breakthroughs;Reduce the time spent by researchers writing and reviewing grant applications, allowing them to spend more time conducting research;Reduce the administrative burden associated with a PD/PI managing multiple NIGMS research grants; andEnable PD(s)/PI(s) to devote more time and energy to mentoring junior scientists in a more stable research environment.This NOFO invites applications from eligible NIGMS-funded investigators and from New Investigators proposing research that is aligned with NIGMS' scientific mission. The NOFO also allows renewal applications from all current MIRA grantees (including those previously funded as Early-Stage Investigators). Current Early-Stage Investigators (ESIs) should apply through the ESI MIRA NOFO, not this NOFO.

The Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP), participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), and the FDA CTP intend to issue a NOFO soliciting applications. In order to be considered responsive, research must (1) be within the regulatory authority of FDA CTP, (2) address one or more of the following topics: Addiction, Behavior, Communications, Health Effects, Product Composition and Design, and/or Toxicity; and (3) address all components within the subtopic(s) of the selected topic(s). This NOFO aims to support new biomedical, behavioral, and social science investigators who are in the early stages of establishing independent careers in tobacco regulatory research. Applications due July 14, 2026. More information and the Forecast.

Note: Serving as a PI on a funded research project, such as an R03, makes an individual ineligible for a K99/R00 award through the parent K99/R00 NOFO. This restriction is specific to the K99 mechanism and does not affect eligibility for a K01 or K08 award. ICs have their own specific NOFOs other than the parent K99/R00 NOFOs meaning that eligibility requirements can vary by IC, and in many cases, this may render an applicant ineligible for the K99.
